A solid copper pipe conducts electricity. With the base of the coil
grounded and the top at like 250,000 volts, a copper pipe would just short
and conduct away the high voltage. So, we need some really good insulator
for the secondary tube. PVC is easy to find at any hardware store. Avoid
tubes with black plastics in them since they may contain carbon black which
is also conductive enough to short the coil out.

Cheers,
