tuning of coil with flourescent tube

hi all,
         i was running my coil yesterday and i had a flourescent in my hand.
i had done a tuning run with a smaller toroid and the flourescent needed to
be really close to light.
if the coil was out of tune could it light the tube from further away than a
well tuned coil.
if so i wondered if a tuning device could be made with an ldr and some sort
of readout say potential divider or wheatstone bridge
of course i could be way off with this
