Re: Hyperbaric Gap

Hi,
Theoretically speaking, I think vacuum gaps probably
don't quench as good as a 'forced' air gap of the
same size.
That being said, vacuum gaps should offer less 'on'
resistance because there aren't as many air molecules
in the gap to steal precious electrons.
So to correct the quenching issue, you can space
electrodes further apart in a vacuum gap because
there is less air resistance.
Which is more important, quenching or low on
resistance
really depends on the power level of your coil. I
think low power coils would probably want the least on
resistance possible while higher power coils would
require good quenching.
What would really be interesting is to build two gaps,
one vacuum and one forced air and put them in series.
Has anyone tried this?
Another variation on the 'triggered' spark gap could
be
to negatively ionize some quantity of air and then let
it be sucked/blown through a static gap. You could
precisely control the breakdown by how much ionized
air you allow through the gap.
