Chris: When I worked at a NASA tracking site at 10,000 ft alt on top of a
limestone Mt we used a large counterpoise to provide a ground for all
systens. it was made like a large fish net with 4 ft squares over a mile
square area. The wire was 3/8 in copper . We grounded out towers and our
lightning rods to the net system. The limerstone Mt was a good insulator
with no ground water to conduct electricity. The counterpoise with its large
holes worked well even at radar frequencies providing us with a good ground.
We burned off 5/8 in diameter lightning rods at a rate of 6/mounth as we did
attract a lot of lightning.
