Perhaps the first question is: why?
For what purpose?

at best distantly related to wattage' as such.

It can be 'misleading', due to power factor of inductive
loads, etc...
Inductive loads, which transformers may be, can draw
current out of phase with the voltage, the measure
of this called 'power factor' which is a whole long
subject...
