Setting winding tension is easy. Use a folded piece of cardboad in a small
clamp. The clamp adds tension to the v-folded cardboard and the wire goes
through the V.

We got this idea many years ago watching large power xmfrs being wound in a
factory. All they used from wire to winder was one simple V-folded piece of
thick (1/4 inch thick) cardboard. It worked slick and only costs pennies to
make. Most expensive part is the clamp.

I've been winding coils this way for over 35 years and never had a problem.
