If this is the device I believe it is (the mercury turbine) I wouldn't touch
it with a barge pole. In a second or 2 the air would be saturated with
mercury vapour. As someone who has had an experience of accute mercury
poisoning by inhalation, believe me it isn't something you want to
experience, you might not be as lucky as I was. The treatment is really
nasty as well. My wife was sufficiently aware of the symptoms of poisoning
to get me to hospital and under excellent care within minutes of symptoms
showing. leave a few tens of grams of mercury exposed to the air in the
average workshop/laboratory, and within an hour the atmospheric level will
be in excess of the maximum permissible dose.
