Dan,

     The cap should probably solve the problem.  The power controller for my
large coil system uses a modified high voltage dielectric test set, it had
the variac, contactor, and safety interlock systems built in, just had to
put a different plug on it.  It is a Hipotronics model 100HVT to be exact.
Anyway, the main contactor has some sort of AC capacitor across the coil.
I've never had a problem with it chattering whatsoever.
