Hello Cory

I placed two large mots in series, ballasting with three large mots placed
in parallel. Substained eight inch arcs can be drawn with this outfit,
without breakers popping. With only one or two mots for ballast, the arcs
are not very strong. But with three mots for ballast, the arcs are very
strong. With four mots for ballast, the arcs are even stronger, but the cord
starts getting real hot in short order. The current draw problem, when using
four or more mots for ballast, can be solved by using a 10 kVA, 120/240/480
industrial transformer with 240 in/120 out for a power supply. Don't look
directly at the arcs, because there is sure to be UV radiation. I have not
used this outfit to power a Jacob's ladder. I see no value to using a
variac. Your problem is too large of a load. Cut the current with a ballast.
