And, you could certainly run them off 240VAC for half the output voltage.

FWIW 460 is the nominal "load voltage", which would be supplied by a 480V
line.  The 20V difference (about 2%) is the loss from the distribution
transformer to the load.  This is why you'll see motors, etc. (loads) rated
for 230/460, even though we talk about 240/480V distribution.
