What would be the function of the small capacitor? With it
short-circuited
by the spark gap, the circuit is a directly coupled system with a huge
primary capacitor. It would have a large maximum voltage gain, supposing
that the secondary equivalent capacitance is in the pF range, but the
energy transfer would take too many cycles.
