You might have the strike rail elevated too high.  Try going only 1 inch
above pri plane with strike rail 5.5 inches outside of primary.  You can
make up a small "chain" --- a miniture version of the plastic garden posts
you purchase at Home Deport or Walmart.  The stands are not connected to the
oscillator base --- they just encircle it.  340 degrees of metal chain or 14
AWG wire work fine.  Run wires down the inside of the posts and have bananna
jacks on each side of the base of the post.  Jumper wires with bannana plugs
jumper them together.  This makes a great strike ring and can be adjusted to
not flash over to primary coil --- also can be used with different sizes of
coils.  Wooden dowels with bases also work good.

You want to keep this corona "tree" wide at the base so it doesn't interfere
with the primary coil.
