magnetic quenching efficiency

A friend interested in my tesla coils asked why I don't try to design
a magnetically quenched gap. I mentioned tesla did this, but I hadn't
heard of many in the tcml that do or have done this. Another suggestion
was instead of using large rare earth magnets, why not use electromagnets.

I would guess magnetically quenched gaps are either not as efficient
as a (well designed) srsg or too much work to implement or design one.

with regard to using electromagnets, i would say that the rare earth magnets
have a very high output/field density that would be difficult to reproduce
without superconductors.

hmmm, I sense a bit of math could likely help solve this question.

anyone here have any experience with this?
