Indeed.. There are several schemes for detecting lightning that are used
commercially:
Angle of arrival and strength -> www.boltek-dot-com
National Lightning Detection Network -> low frequency RF and time of
arrival at different stations
DMSP Satellites can detect lightning flashes from space.
