Almost all linear regulator systems are not the most efficient beasts - I am
well aware of that fact.  I would gladly give
up 50% of my power to have a output regulated to less than 1V p-p at 4-5kV.
And since I'm not looking for maximum power or arc length - only quality
audio modulation - i'm not worried about losing this power, although heat
dissipation can pose a problem if not dealt with properly.

          Such a regulator will 'eat' voltage and power.
          Max possible efficiency of the regulator is
          50%...

          (ponder how the regulator must do its work:
          'wasting' the excess voltage across the tube...)
