Greg,
THHN may have no meaning outside North America, but
I'm not sure. It refers to the most common type of
house wiring in the US. It is actually an insulation
standard, a type of PVC sheathing which meets certain
US building codes for heat tolerance, oil and moisture
resistance, flamability, etc. THHN is popular over
here because it is cheap and can be found in any
hardware or home improvement (DIY) store. THHN wire
can be solid or stranded. From an electrical
standpoint, it does not matter one whit if you use
solid or stranded wire for a ballast. I find the
stranded stuff is much easier to handle. Fooling
around with solid core wire thicker than 12 ga will
give you arms like Popeye!
