Great Question! There will be a large rotary switch on the base of the coil
, beneath the primary.
Depending on what day of the week it is you can set the unit to be in T/C
mode. Then if you want you can set it into quarter crushing mode. And if the
operator of the coil wishes, He, or she can set it for Marx Generator mode.
But that depends on the magnetic flux parameters of the sun on that day, and
especialy if it is a wednesday.
Three reasons, The great price that the caps were acquired, Having a 600 Kv
cap, that if the rotary and piggies can cope with it you can turn the coil
on and let it run for literaly hours at a time.Just sit in a lawn chair with
a couple of coronas and some lime, and not have to worry about the caps
failing.
And finaly..The "out of the ordinary-ness" of having 10, of the sangamo 60Kv
pulse caps, each weighing 300 pounds, wired in series as the MMc for your
coil.
Here are 2 more pics of the inside of the base, where the MMC is configured.
The caps are isolated on the base by a layer of lexan. Then they are wired
in series in such a configuration where the voltage gradient among the MMC
is kept to a minimum among each adjacent cap with respect to the next one in
the string.
Then one inch acrylic spacers are installed around each caps base, and
around the top of each cap. This sets them in plase and further protects the
MMc from shorting to each other. Although if the caps were to have a
flashover at high power, it would probably just blow all of the panels off
of the base housing, and the coil would just burp a second and keep on
cranking out the sparks,,,,Hmmmm That might be an interesting experiment, We
will move the airplane away from the coil for that one......
