Synchronous Rotary Spark Gap

I am a little foggy on how exactly to build a SRSG.  Mostly on the
controller part, and the phasing/start point/angle setting parts.  Some 
people have capacitors hooked onto their srsg's and other don't.  Do I just 
connect a srsg to the ac line, or do I need a controller or a current 
limiter?  Someone please explain these to me.  I would greatly appreciate a 
straight forward explination on the contruction and workings of a srsg.
