Ignitron is how it's spelled... A pool of mercury in the bottom connected to
one side, another electrode at the top, a small, rough, resistive electrode
(made of carborundum, usually) that causes small sparks to the surface of
the mercury, creating copious mercury vapor, and getting the initial
ionization going. Kind of like an SCR.
Way expensive if bought new... I'm not sure the deionization time is short
enough for TC use, though...
