99.9% chance your are hooking something up wrong here. Very carefully
trace out where each wire to the binding posts is going. Take it apart if
needed. It is so easy for them to hide connections which make all the
difference in the world here. I am sure the AC is just getting to too few
coil windings due to confusion in the hidden areas of the wiring.
They don't make 80 VAC variacs or anything ;-)) You just have to find
where those darn wires go...
