I got the tar out of mine once by turning it upside down over one of those
disposable aluminum turky roasting pans and putting it all in a covered
charcoal grill (a Weber grill).  It worked pretty well.  Since I did it
after thanksgiving, it was plenty cold after it was done so the remaining
tar came off like glass with a chisel.  (I let it cool overnight).  It
wasn't too bad.  Personally I would fear the consequences of using my
cooking oven for tar removal -- baked tar potatoes, baked tar lasagna,
baked tar bread, etc.  That's my fear, not experience.
