You might get short wave UV from N2, but Hg is a lot more efficient at
making it. I have a short wave UV germicidal lamp, fits into a 15"
fluorescent housing, which I used to erase EPROMs once upon a time. I
know that long wave UV would work, but This tube was about $2.00 on the
surplus market, and would erase the chips quickly. It would produce
copious amounts of ozone in operation. I used to run it in a different
room when I would erase chips, and the room would smell strongly of O3
after a 10 minute bleach cycle.
I thought that atmospheric O3 came from the direct action of solar UV
upon atmospheric O2. I'm not sure that N2 has any role in the reaction.
