Bart,

Sparks don't stay colored for very long. To get a feel for the effect,
wet a copper wire and roll the end in table salt (NaCl) and use that
wire as a discharge electrode on your toroid. You'll see yellow for the
first few inches and then the nitrogen in the air takes over and the
arcs go purple.

We've doped electrodes in every noxious chemical you can think of... The
effect is short lived...
