i have thought about building a mechanical rectifier system. The main 
advantage i can see is that it will give you a direct path back to ground 
(if the contacts are touching). This could have important safety 
considerations as you wont have the blocking action of  the diodes in a 
silicon rectifier system. So hopefully you are not left with a fully 
charged  primary cap when you switch off the juice. Of course  one should 
always ground the primary before touching everything anyway.
