I assume this refers to a tube type unit. A small TC can also be
powered up from a spark-type diathermy unit such as used to be for sale
dirt cheap at swap meets. Basic ingredients are a high-voltage
transformer, energy storage capacitor, some kind of a tank coil and an
impressive spark gap (usually multiple gaps in series) on the panel. I
have one here which has a 3500 volt transformer and an 0.004 mfd
capacitor. Tunes to about 2 MHz with the internal coil. I've been
intending for years to build a coil using it as a base, but like a lot
of other projects haven't gotten around to it. Harry Goldman has quite a
collection of the gadgets, but don't think he ever modified one either.
Unfortunately, someone must have decided these things are
"collectibles" and the last time I saw one (Rose Bowl swap meet) the guy
wanted $350 for one in lousy shape without a case. Someone must have
bought it, as it was gone when I walked by his table later.
