Just as there are several ways of implementing a meter to
measure any particular quantity, so it will be with e.s. voltmeters.
The fact that one company's solution does not allow the meter to
register AC does not mean that there is a rule for all regarding AC
measurement. The oldest types will indeed register AC as well as DC
voltages as they use e.s. attraction/repulsion between charged
plates. Newer types will no doubt have a bundle of electronics
between the sensing element/s and a digital or analogue display of
some flavour.
