You could try a "spinner" (corona motor) on top of the discharge electrode,
or carefully bring a large clear globe incandescent light near to the
discharge. Probably better on the end of a wood rod with the discharge you
mention. Also, try a wad of steel wool on the discharge point. With the steel
wool you may need something to keep the burning metal off of the coil itself.
