Don,
The main drawback of using an OBIT is its feebleness,
both in power and reliability. The very thin secondary
wire is subject to failure. Also shorts often occur in the tar.
They are best suited for use with rather small capacitors,
to limit the output to about 13" or so. I accomplished this
with a 0.0015uF capacitor. With a resonant sized cap,
25" sparks can be obtained, but OBIT failure tends to follow
closely on the heels of such performance. OBIT's are
similar to NST's but probably even more susceptible to
an early death. The OBIT name is quite appropriate
come to think of it.
Cheers,
John
