Hi Gregg,
Pole pigs are basically "brute beast" and are really rather difficult
(though not impossible) to kill in Tesla service. A safety spark gap
is never a "bad" idea although it isn't essential to a pole pig system.
I've been operating a 10 kVA pole pig for 2 years in my large coil
system and the pole pig transformer has never even "hiccupped"
while powering my coil, whether with or without a safety gap :-))
But then again, I have heard of at least one coiler killing a pole pig
in Tesla service, although I have to wonder if this particular pig was
a "lemon" from the start?
John Freau mentioned that the safety gap was a good idea for pro-
tection of the primary capacitor from overvoltages as well as the
transformer, so like I said before, you certainly can't go wrong with
the safety gap.
