This brings to mind Tesla's own design for a Van de Graaff generator. (See
http://www.tfcbooks-dot-com/special/van_de_g.htm for a drawing.) The
protrusions on the terminal are vacuum tubes containing a single cylindrical
element of proportionally large surface area relative to the tube itself.
