Dan, I have a 4.5 x 18 secondary ( I ran short on wire)  was shooting for
22". I wound it with 26 gauge and  it seems to perform well, 42" arcs. Being
below the recommended 5:1 length ratio I get a lot of strikes to the strike
protection rail around the primary.
