It is a larger coil, 12kv / 60mA input, entire structure is about 4.5 feet
tall 
with max arc lengths of about 36".  I haven't had any primary to secondary
arcing 
problems, I've had moderate intersecondary arcing problems, but have fixed
most 
of these.  It really suprises me that 8" is not nearly enough... the tube I 
ground with is about an inch in diameter, we'll say inner diameter of .85in, 
which gives a total surface area of about 150in^2 of surface area of
contact with 
very moist soil.

I will heed your suggestion and pick up a few more rods though... don't
want to 
take any chances!
