Hi folks,
Well, checking the dumpster every day pays off. I
found a fully self contained variac mounted on a
control panel just now. So I think that other huge
bare one will go on the back burner for a while. This
one's not as big but should work if it tests ok. Plus
the hinged control panel may come in handy too. The
variac has a huge knob and 0-100 dial plate on it. 

The poster asking for knobs and face plates could
check this surplus place in nebraska.

it's an electrical surplus place that I saw on the web
that sells all kinds of knobs and dial plates and
variacs etc.

I am waiting for a bonus check at work so I can buy my
#26 wire, nst protection circuitry and tungsten gaps.
