Sadly.. these things are more expensive than the variac it seems..  I've
seen lots of surplus autotransformers, but the knobs are always thrashed or
missing.  You can make one if you need to.... Take a look at things like the
handwheels they use on valves and machine tools, or, a small steering wheel.
You might need a bushing that changes the diameter to something reasonable,
but that's a fairly straightforward thing to come by (think pipe)..
