An alternative view
The ease of construction is what matters here. A ring of copper will be
better than Aluminium BUT the placing of say effectively Two parallel strips
of good conductor (each way around the ring) 1"wide by say 12" total length
into the primary path will have very little impact on overall losses.
Copper has a resistivity of 1.6uohn/cm^3 and Aluminium 2.66uohm/cm^3. Given
that the fact that most losses will occur in the primary coil the spark gap
itself and ESR of the caps I assert again that the point of a ring or no
ring is completely moot.
