Pole pigs are so durable that "safety gaps" are usually not used at all.
Just do your tuning at a lower power setting, ie, 20-25% on the variac, and
set the spark gap close so you aren't charging up the caps to max value.
We use a pair of 200 watt, 400 Ohm Digi-Key power resistors in parallel to
surpress any ultra fast transients. That's really all that is necessary.
Just use one of the computer programs to get your coil close to dialed in
before you fire it up.
