The RMS carrying capacity is higher with DC than with AC

The primary issue before was getting it from AC to DC and from useable
voltage to high voltage.  Solid state is wonderful stuff...

It's also nice in that it can be synched with the local grid with minimal
issues whereas a 60HZ line needs a bunch of accurate phase-shift circuitry.
