I think being afraid of coils is a good thing. Or respecting their lethal
potential. When I demonstrate mine (under 1000 w) I constantly tell all to
keep their distance, that it was like an open television.

I just got my first shock in 10 years - hand to hand, 10 kv to ground-not a
big deal at all, but I was sloppy and in a hurry and left the Variac on.

You guys with the pigs-jeez, the currents (just from the mains) you are
dealing with! In your house? The rec room? Be afraid, be very afraid.

GVP - a 40 year coiler.

Dan,
do what Ross O did... He stuck his fiancee inside Brian
Basura's cage of death :).. On the side note, just sit
down and discuss w/ her the dangers of the coil, where
it comes from and show her some safety features you've
built into the coil and into the test site. I know that
I had to convince both my parents and my neighbors it
was safe the way i was operating it. If you show them
what you've setup for safety and you can convince her
that "some chicken wires on wood" is a safety feature,
then you'll be fine
