Here's a tip for all new coilers that, like me, don't own a
large variac. Get a filiment transformer, 6.3 or 12.6 vac from your local
ham club or flea market and put its secondary in SERIES with the primary of
the NST. Make
sure it is adding not subtracting voltage. You will know by increased output
if you have it correctly wired. It is amazing how much difference 12 volts
makes. With my
coil and a 12kv NST, I almost doubled the length of sparks.
