Re: mmc and high current.........

Hi Dave,

MMCs work fine for high powered systems but we need to know the BPS rate (sync
rotary, async, or static gap) and the cap size resonant or LTR?? 10 or more
caps per string is fine but it's the current that needs to be checked. This
depends on the cap value and breakrate. Here is same data I just guessed at:

MMC Calculator Ver. 2.2 9/12/2000 Terry Fritz
Transformer voltage = 14400
Transformer current = .5
Firing voltage = 20364.62
Fo =  200000
Break rate = 120
Thermal dissipation constant = 22
Individual cap value = 1.5E-07

Strings Caps/Str Capacitance Voltage Temp C Cost I Arms
  2 3 100.00 6000 43.79 21.00 :-(( :-(( 28.73
  4 6 100.00 12000 10.95 84.00 :-(( :-| 28.73
  6 9 100.00 18000 4.87 189.00 :-| :-)) 28.73
  7 11 95.45 22000 3.26 269.50 :-)) :-)) 27.42
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  8 12 100.00 24000 2.74 336.00 :-)) :-)) 28.73
  9 13 103.85 26000 2.33 409.50 :-)) :-)) 29.83

But I really need to know what cap value and breakrate and spark gap type you
have. The program is at:

BTW - Here is Chip's MMC that he used to replace his infamuous "Halloween
coil's" commercial cap:

This may be the first high power MMC.

Cheers,

        Terry
