Re: Spark Gaps
Original poster: "Terry Fritz" <twftesla-at-qwest-dot-net>
Hi,
A synchronous rotary spark gap fires at various points during the 60Hz charging
cycle. The timing is precise and can be before or after the peak voltage (much
like the timing in a car). LTR rotary gap coils need the timing set at an odd
point in the AC cycle. This allows much larger primary cap sizes that give
~30% more power. Only a sync timed gap can do that.
Rotary gaps also run cool and have a nice steady buzz to them. The new
triggered gaps are equivalent to sync rotaries.
Cheers,
Terry
