I have noted this as well.  Normally, the firing rate of a static gap is
chaotic - the BPS speed varies from one moment to the next.  But
occasionally, if the variac is set just right, it will settle into a BPS
rate synchronized with the mains frequency, either 60 (what I observed) or
120 (in theory) BPS.  But then a butterfly in Mexico flaps its wings and it
reverts back to chaotic behavior.

I've ocassionally heard the sound of almost a pure tone
with my NST powered TC, unsing multiple static gap
when just the right gap/voltage/cap team up. It doesn't
last long, but when it does the streamers are smooth, with
fewer branches and long flowing lines.
