I would stay away from americium for health and safety reasons. In a similar
fashion I have stopped using thoriated tungsten in my TIG welder and switched
over to non-radioactive lanthanated tungsten instead.

Spark gaps (and TIG welders) vaporize metals, and some of these you do not
want to be breathing. Its not a risk worth taking.
