Matt,
There must be a short in your wiring of the Al box or the house wiring is
incorrect or both. If you have a voltmeter you can check the outlet: the
wide slot is neutral (white wire), the narrow slot is hot (black wire), and
the round third prong is ground (green wire). The hot should measure 120
(or close depending on local values) to both neutral and ground. Ground to
neutral should be 0 volts. If any of these measure different than this
there is mis-wiring somewhere. There are plug-in testers that light up to
indicate correct wiring of outlets though I don't know of a source (McMaster
maybe?). A light bulb could be used as an indicator if you connect it to
probes.
Check your wiring, the plug, cord, connections to the variac, and
connections inside your Al enclosure. Be very careful and don't work with
this until you fix the problem. You can kill yourself with 120vac.
Take care,
Pete Komen

Ok, i have something to ask that may sound stupid(still taking engineering
in
highschool)
I am getting shocked bad with the Al enclosure grounded to house ground.I
have the 3rd prongs wire connected to the Al box that houses the PSU and 555
circuit. The Al heatsink and MOSFET are outside.
I am getting a reading of 122volts AC from enclosure to heatsink and the
power is off!I am using a variac for in power. How can i get shocked?I
touched
the Al enclose and the heatsink just accidentally and ERRRRRRRRRRRRR!Felt
real funny after the shock.
Otherwise, good output again and the MOSFET is staying pretty cool.
