As a lot of others seem to be pointing out, a counterpoise doesn't need
to be very large in order to be effective. A radius equal to the coil
height will probably be good enough in all cases, one twice that would
always be. A good ground for the bottom of the coil should be
worthwhile protection in case there's an arc to the primary HV power
supply. The water pipes should be more than adequate for that, no
matter how long the lead.
