At the prices in which they can be obtained.  (You can get a 20A, 120VAC
variac on ebay for under $50.00 and a smaller one for much less), it doesn't
even
pay to even think about building your own.  Check out Ebay.  Search for
"variac", "powerstat", or "variable transformer"

You could probably get a 8A or 10A, 120V variac for about $20.00
