http://www.cadsoft.de - Their Eagle software is available in a cut-down 
version for free; runs on Linux and Windows.  From the schematic, you can 
also create PCB layouts; the CAM processor will even create files to let 
you make your own boards...

If you get into making PCBs, beware the auto-router function when dealing 
with power electronics; best to do it by hand.
