Polemount transformers are designed to be very efficient as they are always
on. Single phase ones are made using "step-lap" cores instead of the typical
EI laminations used in a typical transformer. None of this is relevant in
using one for tesla coiling, but that is one big thing that makes pole mount
transformers special aside from the liquid coolant and insulation and
ability to withstand high voltage spikes.
