This sure looks like an internal resistor failure.  It is very unlikely
that a "nearby" problem would cause damage inside a resistor like this.  It
looks like it was hot enough to melt the alumina core of the resistor.  If
a resistor opens up, the cap above it can see high voltages and fail.  I'll
check the resistances of the resistors to see if they have drifted out
indicating they are beginning to fail...  If you still have any strings
there, you may want to check to see if the resistors are still the proper
value.
