The NST transformer is just a power source, that could be many other
devices, and is unrelated to the operation of the RF system.

The Oudin system uses an autotransformer instead of separated
primary and secondary coils. It then uses magnetic coupling
and a direct connection.

A direct connection is really used for the coupling between the
secondary and third coils of a magnifier. It is also possible to
make a magnifier without magnetic coupling, with only
magnetic couplings, or with both.
